#2 - Robin Grey, The Notes and Scratches, Glass Candy

Wooo, Episode #2 is here! Featured artists on today's podcast include Robin Grey, The Notes and Scratches, and Glass Candy!! As always you can choose to grab the standard mp3 format or opt for the enhanced podcast (rife with pictures and album art). The enhanced podcast will play on most music players, but to get the extras you'll need to play it either in iTunes or on a video iPod.
If there's one artist I'll recommend from this week's podcast, it's The Notes and Scratches. They have a couple of really good albums - but I'll tell you all about that in the podcast. Enjoy!

Nine Inch Nails, Jane's Addiction & Street Sweeper - NIN/JA EP

Again this link was brought to my attention by Free Albums Galore. Unlike Coldplay's live album, Nine Inch Nails released a creative commons licensed promo EP for the NIN/JA 2009 Tour. The EP has two tracks each from Nine Inch Nails, Jane's Addiction, and Street Sweeper. All of the tracks are unreleased to boot!

And since they're licensed via creative commons, I likely will be playing one or two of these tracks in an upcoming podcast (who knows when???). In the mean time, if you want to grab it, you can do so here (http://ninja2009.com/).

That's all the extras for this week, stay tuned for the podcast! Trust me, it's a good one.

Free Music: Coldplay

Courtesy of the Free Albums Galore site, I've got a link to some free music! Now this won't be airing on my blog since I doubt Coldplay are big fans of creative commons licensing, but since it's free, there's nothing stopping me from sharing the link.

In order to get a free copy of their live album, Left Right Left Right Left, you just go to this website (http://lrlrl.coldplay.com/leftright.html) and enter your e-mail, and you get a download link.

That simple!

Polaris Music Prize 2009 Website Live

Well, looks like the Polaris Music Prize 2009 website is live! It was launched May 25, 2009, and you can check it out at polarismusicprize.ca. The long list of finalists will be announced June 15th. I'll be posting a copy of the Long List when it's released, so if you forget about it - I'll remind you!

In case you're not sure what the Polaris Prize is all about, here's a brief summary: it's an independant prize (including $25,000 to the winner) awarded by a panel of judges to the best of the best of Canadian music. Each year, and this is the 4th year for the prize, a Long List of 40 album titles is announced. Shortly after, the Short List of 10 artists is announced before the final announcement of the winner in a grand gala in Toronto.

It's a very exciting and prestigious award. The past three winners of the Polaris prize are:
2006: Final Fantasy, He Poos Clouds
2007: Patrick Watson, Close to Paradise
2008: Caribou, Andorra

Here's to the 2009 Polaris Music Prize!!

Free Albums Galore

I think by now any readers of the blog will have figured out that I'm going to be writing about things in between podcast updates (which should be on Saturdays or Sundays, depending on how busy the week is). Most of it will be links to other articles or blogs, but it'll be a mixed bag of things.

I just wanted to let everyone in on a great blog that I've been using to find some of my music for the podcast. Free Albums Galore goes through all the free albums available on the net and puts up reviews of some pretty cool music. I'm most likely going to feature some of those albums myself on the podcast, but if you'd like to get a headstart on listening to some awesome free tunes, check out http://freealbums.blogsome.com/.

Stay tuned to the blog, I'll be posting some links to free music that won't be airing on the podcast (but it's still free).

i (heart) music benefit May 29

If you haven't yet heard, Ottawa-based music promoter i (heart) music has been having trouble with SOCAN. He owes them a lot of money due to some pretty odd laws surrounding the reimbursement of artists who are members of SOCAN. In an effort to raise enough funds to get then off his back, i (heart) music will be putting on a benefit show. Details are on the poster below. It's $6 @ Cafe Dekcuf.

Alternative Airwaves #1

Thanks for dropping by and showing interest in the Alternative Airwaves podcast! The goal of this podcast is to shed light on some really great artists that would otherwise go un-noticed, as well as finding some cool, copyright-free music.

All music in the podcast is either protected by the Creative Commons copyright system, or the copyright on the music has expired. It's all explained in the podcast, so go ahead and listen! The direct download link can be found at the end of this post.

But first here are some notes that I didn't include, mostly because it would take up too much time. If you want to subscribe to the podcast, you can do so in a number of ways:

  • iTunes: I'm working on getting it available on iTunes. I'll let you know when it's there.

  • Subscribe to this blog: If you have an RSS reader (such as Google Reader), you can subscribe to this blog and received updated posts automatically. Further instructions can be found here.

  • Direct download: Every podcast will have a corresponding blog post to go with it, which includes a direct download link as well as the complete playlist.

In short, you don't need to read the blog to get the podcast, but I'll probably add some extra goodies that you won't find in the podcast itself. I should be able to do this once a week, since I was able to put this together in a few days.

If you come across some great, free music that you think should be shared, just send me an e-mail! The address for the podcast is altairwaves@gmail.com. I'm very open to suggestions.
