#87.5 - Vacation'd

Here's a quick podcast to tide you over!  I don't talk about very much - it's mostly about the music.

I was able to push my way through the humidity and record a half episode today - no full episode for a while because SUMMER.  I've been busy between vacations and just being busy in general with summer time activities.  So here's a quick podcast to tide you over!  I don't talk about very much - it's mostly about the music.

Don't forget to check out http://www.zencast.fm if you're interested in starting your own podcast, or are looking for a new podcast host!  It's an excellent service that hosts this very podcast.  You get full statistics, etc.  Right now it's free - go check it out!

I also used Spreaker to record this episode, which is its own podcast platform.  I don't intend to use it long term for Alternative Airwaves (the quality just isn't right), but will be using it for another project I want to start up (which I will also use zencast.fm for!).

The music (don't forget to check out the full Summer 2015 playlist from Jamendo!):

Weekly Airwave # 45 // Netlabel Day 2015

I hope you all enjoyed the bonus audio in your podcast feed last week; it was an unexpected turn of events from my end, that's for sure!  This week, I don't have an individual song for you - rather, I'm shining the spotlight on Netlabel Day 2015.  I talked about it in the last podcast, but it is officially here!

Head over to the official website, or stay tuned with everything going on with their twitter account.  It looks like releases are being staggered throughout the day, so following the twitter account is the best bet to catch them as they go live.

The full list of releases can be found on their release page - I haven't counted but there has to be at least 100 original, free tracks being released today.

Expect a recap podcast in about a week!

Weekly Airwave # 44 // Nic Falcon - Playing Fair

Blocsonic recently launched a brand new site redeisgn - I'd say two weeks ago?  In any case, if you weren't familiar with Blocsonic before (how could you not be if you follow this podcast?), it is a great netlabel that focuses on both original music and deluxe re-release editions.  Most of the artists found there will have a hip hop angle to it, but not everything; it's also home to the infamous netBloc, a compilation of various Creative Commons tracks around the Web.

Nic Falcon's Playing Fair EP was released back in March, but I missed it the first time around.  A shame, since this two-track album is pretty great.  It's more of a pop-rock sound and the title track is my favourite here.  These tracks are actually part of blocsonic's "fortyFive" series; the full listing of the series can be found here.  There are some other gems in there that will find their way to the podcast!

While you're reading, do yourself a favour and download Playing Fair!

Weekly Airwave # 43 // Emerald Park - Graduation Failed

Emerald Park are an indie-pop outfit from Malmo, Sweden. We try to deliver bright and catchy indiepop songs and free of artifice.

That's as official a description as I could find over at Emerald Park's Bandcamp page.  I recently played a track from their latest album, GO!GO!GO!, on Podcast # 87.  I really liked the track, and the whole album, so I thought it best to include Emerald Park in the Weekly Airwave series.

I selected the song "Graduation Failed".  I thought it was a great, catchy pop tune that also sounds unique.  It definitely fits on the list of Creative Commons tracks I would regularly listen to.  I think this time around, Emerald Park did a great job in producing something that sounds at the same time familiar and reminiscent of their older work, but something new as well.

I thought of selecting the title track, but feel that it's already getting enough exposure (at over 2,600+ listens at the time of writing).

Weekly Airwave #42 // Jasmine Jordan - Possibilities

We return to Jamendo this week with a funk-laced hip hop track from Jasmine Jordan, "Possibilities".  The track is from an album called the Time Travel EP, which was released about a month ago now.  The album itself is currently featured on the Jamendo main page, which is great exposure for any artist!

Jordan records out of Los Angeles, which should come as no surprise for an aspiring pop singer.  You can catch up with her at her website, www.jasminejordanmusic.com.

I actually had no idea what kind of music I was in for when I clicked on the album link, because I only clicked on it for the name - "Time Travel EP".  I had the suspicion that it was going to be a hip hop track, but I didn't really know for sure.  Anyway, while you're listening to Possibilities, do yourself a favour and listen to the rest of the EP.  There may or may not be a Back to the Future reference in it.

Weekly Airwave #41 // Alabama Shakes - Hang Loose

The Weekly Airwave returns, as promised in the last episode.  It's in a different format from previous incarnations - I knew I wanted to just present the track without audio commentary, but I wasn't sure whether I wanted to make it a part of the podcast feed or just link to the track.  I decided on the latter, for various reasons which I won't go in to now.

This week's track: Hang Loose by The Alabama Shakes.  Originally from their debut album, Boys & Girls, Hang Loose is a jangly track that just puts a smile on my face.  You may be more familiar with their track, Hold On, which is probably the best on the album, but that's not saying that the rest of the album is utter crap.

Quite the opposite - Boys & Girls is a fantastic album, and they recently released a follow-up: Sound & Color.  I'm listening to it right now as I write this, and I'm pretty confident in saying that it's a definite improvement over their debut.

It pleased me to discover that the Free Music Archive had a track from the Shakes available for download; I was merely content to find an artist similar in sound.  This particular version of the track was performed live @ KEXP.  You can download it directly from the FMA here - or stream it below.  (FMA-Limited License)

#86 - Another Baseball Episode

Inspired by another beautiful, sunny day and a 10th straight Blue Jays win (and a few hefeweizens), enjoy another episode full of great music and some baseball facts.  Unfortunately, there is still a general lack of songs about baseball in the Creative Commons world.  But there is no lack of awesome songs, and included among those are two cover songs!  Enjoy!

The Ottawa Senators Are In The Playoffs - A Playlist

I haven't made very many "traditional" blog posts in a long time (in fact, here's the last one!), but it is something I'd like to return to.  (By "traditional", I mean posts that aren't just show notes for a podcast episode.)  So if you were expecting a new episode when you clicked a link to www.alternativeairwaves.tk, I apologize - I haven't recorded anything (yet).  Further apologies if you were not expecting to read about SportsPuck on a music blog.

On Saturday April 11, 2015, the Ottawa Senators clinched a playoff berth in the NHL; for those who don't follow hockey, this is an extremely big deal for a couple of reasons: 1) The Senators were 14 points OUT of a playoff spot in February, and clinched a spot in the last game of the season.  2) This is the first team in modern NHL history to do this.

So obviously, I am quite pumped.  At one point on Saturday, I was thinking that I was feeling really good - as if I had had a few drinks and was feeling a buzz.  I actually had NOT had anything to drink during the game, because it was a 12:30pm Eastern start.   But I was just really excited and happy - I was expecting the team to be out of the playoffs at the start of the season, so this was a pleasant surprise.

Given that it is now officially Spring (it's not Spring until you've got your team in the playoffs and can drive with the windows down), I present to you an accompanying playlist for your listening pleasure.  I set out looking for some hard rock songs, but there are others in there that simply fit the profile of "this would be cool to listen to while driving around town".  Others I picked because of lyrical content that fit the context of the situation.

All tracks are available from Jamendo.  Enjoy!

#84 - Three Out of Four Ain't Bad

A short episode today, fueled by an Amsterdam Brewery 9% Imperial Stout and 3 out of 4 wins in Curling this week.  Featured songs include a recommendation from a fellow Redditor, an Ottawa band I just discovered this weekend, and a new tune from Great White Buffalo - all that music and some cool things the Free Music Archive is doing.  Tune in and enjoy!

Show Notes: #81 - Best of 2014

Kicking off 2015 with a somewhat lazy look at 2014; most of these tracks were taken from Jamendo’s Best of 2014 playlist, with a few exceptions.  I’m going to try to keep up with the podcast on a more regular basis in 2015 as well.  In today’s episode I mostly talked about random things.  Apologies for some of the music hiccups!  My intention today was just to get a podcast released.  Stay tuned to the end of the episode & hear some podcast recommendations.
