This Week in Music Blogs: Week 22/2012

There have been so many things to talk about in the music industry in the last two weeks - Donna Summer died, Adam Yauch died...and for the weeks that it would have been relevant for me to write something about them, I dropped the ball big time.  So of course I don't really have anything momentous to talk about.  Well, I do have a few things.

First, being a big fan of I Am Not Lefthanded, I'm really happy to see that they've been invited to North by Northeast this year - and they're going to be the only Irish band performing.  Unfortunately they spent all of their funds putting their new album - The Fire and the Sigh - together for release (and it's finally coming out as a digital release, June 3rd).  I've been lucky enough to receive a 6-track preview, and you're in for a treat.  Anyway, they've launched a Kickstarter to fund a tour of Canada!  I'm really excited about this, because it means a potential stop in Ottawa if they get what they need.  You can check out their Kickstarter page to get all the details on what kind of goodies you can get by pledging.  They're really close to their goal of $2,000, so help out if you can.

Speaking of shows in Ottawa, another band I like to throw my support behind, Streets of Hastings, is having a show at the Elmdale Tavern.  It's Saturday, June 16th, $8 in advance, and they have a pretty cool deal - it's called Bring Yer Buds for Suds.  Basically, for every two friends you bring to the show (who haven't seen the band), the band will buy you a beer!  That's pretty sweet, I think.

Well, that's more than I've written in the last 4 weeks, so might as well stop there.

Time for links!

#50 - Just Another Milestone

I finally made it to #50!  I didn't get the chance to plan anything special - we'll leave that for number 100.  In the show today: songs pulled from Mike's last ASR show; new tracks from Swedish pop bands; a demo from Brad Sucks; and a really cool cover of a Robert Palmer track.  Plus I instituted a new rule for the show - a 30-minute hard time limit.  I hope it makes for a tighter podcast.  Hope you enjoy it!  The playlist is below.  As always, links are provided.

  1. Radio Star - A Common Tale (A Common Tale, 2011)
  2. The Ease Down - Heavy Hopes (Shapeshifter, 2007)
  3. Carsie Blanton - Idiot Heart (Idiot Heart, 2012)
  4. Chasing Eidolon - Sunset (Chasing Eidolon, 2010)
  5. Emerald Park - Things (Absolute Zero, 2012)

  7. Brad Sucks - Waste of TV (Demo) (Guess Who's a Mess, TBD)
  8. Ellen & The Escapades and Hope & Social - Addicted to Love (orig. Robert Palmer) (Covermesongs)

This Week in Music Blogs - Week 19/2012

The structure of these posts is still a work in progress.  I decided this week to post the links on Sunday, at the end of the week, to make sure I get all of this week's posts in.  And, to do a little write-up of what you'll find below.

This week most of the music I found (and actually, most of the music I find every week) is dominated by roots/Americana/blues/however you want to call it; there's one tribute to MCA; and two places where you'll find some more "indie"-sounding music (Herohill and Chromewaves).  Not too much in the way of free music this week, but there are a lot of reviews and write-ups to check out (most of which include streaming music).

I hope you enjoyed your weekend - now you can get some sweet music to keep you entertained throughout the week.

#49 - Cinco de Mayo

Happy Cinco de Mayo, everyone!  It's everybody's favourite Mexican holiday, because it's fun to pronounce.  Today's podcast is actually NOT themed around this holiday, but it was too convenient to pass up for a name.  Plenty of great stuff in this week's podcast, with songs coming from Jamendo, the Free Music Archive, and Wired.

  2. Armando Lagozza > Los mariachi (Los mariachi single, Jamendo)
  3. Michael Stasis > Brown Cow (Chainsaw, Free Music Archive)
  4. CEBE > Honey Cotton (Honey Cotton, Jamendo)
  5. Ed Schrader's Music Beat > I Can't Stop Eating Sugar (Live at WFMU's Talk Cheap Aug 25 2011, Free Music Archive)
  6. Beastie Boys > Now Get Busy (The WIRED CD(I paraphrased from this article)
  7. Montes Rook > Reason To Do (Patience, Bandcamp)
  8. Hello Future > Paparazzi (Lady Gaga Cover) (Acoustic, Jamendo)
